Expandable Fence
The fence works to keep my maltese puppy and cat from going up the stairs into the attic. It looks attractive and anyone can see they are not to pass up to the attic. It is not strong enough to keep a small child from knocking it over since its free standing. If that is what you are wanting then you would need a much sturdier kind.

Good enough for showing older children this rooms off limits
Very cheap so I use it to hang my Christmas card to

Returning because of poor quality
I bought this to use with my Grandkids but the wood is so rough I'm concerned that they would end up with splinters if they grabbed it.
Mar 23, 2017
You can't use it for its intended purpose if it falls apart

Expandable Fence
Very cheap made item. This item not worth the money.

Great for what I needed
can't understand all the negative comments/

I am returning this item due to inferior quality
This fence looks really nice in the catalog. It is shown with children's toys in the foreground. It is ugly in person and could never be used in the way depicted. The wood is rough like that used for snow fences.

Good product if used the right way in the right application
We use the expandable fence to keep our golden retriever on the front porch, so he doesn't run down to the gate and bark at other dogs or dig in the garden. It is easy to set it at the top of the porch steps and easy to move it out of the way when not needed. The only problem is that it is really kind of flimsy. These fences don't seem to last more than a couple of years. The current one I have is the third that I have purchased from Harriet Carter. The other two broke apart and became unusable.

Not worth the money!
It is poorly made. Feel apart with a couple of days. Does not look like the good wood in the picture. I wish I could give it less stars.

I bought two to use as a gate area to my new gazebo built.
Keeps my dog out of my newly built gazebo

Dog has torn it up

It is the perfect item for our need.
We needed protection for side of outside lift for my husband to be able to leave the house. It is a perfect fit and very little installation.
Apr 29, 2016
Cheap flimsy Chinese product. Insert says not for use with pets or small children. What else would anyone buy this for? Large children? Will probably break within 2 weeks.
Apr 20, 2016
It will depend on your pet
While it is made of lightweight cheap wood, it worked for us because our dogs have been trained to not challenge barriers that we put up. If you have a pet that does challenge barriers, then this won't work because it is too light and can be pushed out of the way by a persistent pet.

I had to return this item because of the poor quality. It was very flimsy, not sturdy enough to hold in pets. I was disappointed also that I had to pay for shipping to return it. When the company received the item, they did refund my money immediately which I appreciated.

Still waiting for my refund! I was told a return label would be sent to me for returning the jun. That was ONE MONTH AGO!! I want my money refunded, the is the worst product I have purchased from your catalog. You say satisfaction is garnered or my money will be refunded!!! Where is it?

It was too expensive for the quality very unstable product

I will not pay a processing fee ever again. That is an insult to my intelligence. i will be ordering this same product again, but I have found it for the same price from a competitor without the processing fee. Therefore, I will not order from Harriet Carter as long as yu gouge for a processing fee.

The quality is much less than I had hoped.
Using for a dog doorway gate. It has lost a couple of boards already.
Nov 05, 2015
It does the job but is crudely made. Never would recommend
Secure our do in his area
Aug 27, 2015
Flimsy,poor workmanship
This product was not good workmanship. There is only one screw holding the end pieces on the expansion part. Very flimsy. I would not reorder.

Expandble Fence
I bought this product to put in my door way to keep my dog from going into to my kitchen I have one at each door opening and they work great they are light weight easy to put together and look nice depending on what you use them for I think you would be very pleased also.

Expandable Fence
We purchased the gate to use as room divider. The end piece came off the first day;and, part of the lattice work splintered and broke the second day. It was not fixable and rendered the purchase an aggravating waste.

Splinter factory
Cheap materials are too light weight and the wood is unfinished with an extremely rough quality.

Cheap not made well
The dog had it down in 3min. Not made well very cheap . Save your $
Apr 01, 2015
Not worth the trouble
I used it to keep the dogs in the kitchen. It kept falling down, clumsy to move. broke quickly, and it did not stop the small dogs and they did not try to knock it down.
Jul 04, 2014
It was like one big splinter. Very poor
Returned the gate. It was to be used to keep my puppy in the Laundry Room. The finish was rough and splinters would have been on everything it touched. It looked like it should have been finished with a coat of shellac or should have been sanded down before being released to the customer. Worst item I have ever purchased and then it cost me $11.70 to return to you. Where is you Q.C. team?

Just What I Was Looking For!
I ordered 2 of these because I had been looking for an attractive free standing gate. I use them to keep my (strong) Pekeingese dog out of the living room and dining rooms. They look so great - better than those complicated ones attached to the walls. The color, texture and steadiness of the gates are good. And they do the job - I honestly couldn't be more pleased.

Do Not Buy!
This product is so poorly constructed it was falling apart in the delivery box. Poorly constructed I did not even attempt to put it up.
Mar 18, 2014
Do not buy!
1st problem the description I read did not say rustic wood . When I opened the box it was splintered wood and instructions said to apply protective stain. What stain! 2nd it also stated to keep small children and pets away from it! And 3rd it smelled . I won't send it back because of cost but will use it outside where our small dogs go with supervision.

Expandable Gate
Delivery good; service good; I really like the idea of the stand alone, just wish it were more sturdy and not so flimsy! If sturdier I would buy more!
Feb 24, 2014
Very decorative
I purchased 6 of these. We have 4 Shih Tzus. Two adults and two new puppies. We have tile throughout the house with wool area rugs. We had to block off the rooms with area rugs until the puppies get potty trained. The only negative feature on this gate is that we had to shorten them because they were too high at the bottom and the pups could crawl right under them. They are very pretty and blend in with our decor well.

Not worth the price!
When I received the package containing the fence, it had a horrible smell and had to put it outside till the next day. The ad said there were no tools required, but there was some assembly required, which was made more difficult because some parts were not made correctly. The fence is advertised as "rustic", but that is an understatement! It is totally raw wood. Doesn't look like the picture at all. It is very flimsy also. But, for my purposes, it is acceptable. I just wanted to block my tiny dog from parts of the house and it does that. But, it must be kept hidden when not in use because of its "rustic" nature! If it had been $5.oo or so, I might have said I got what I paid for. But, for $26.50, it wasn't even close!

Works well to keep deer out of a small area

Waiting for refund
I wanted it to keep my dog in the room. It was broken when I received it. Poorly constructed.
Apr 27, 2013
If only
So delicate it fell apart upon opening; I meant to use it as a barrier for small dogs but it seemed only strong enough for climbing plants.
Apr 17, 2013
expandable gate
easy to put together--not made for kids to climb I got it to block hallway from dogs works great
Apr 04, 2013
Weak and poor finish on the wood.
Service/Delivery were great. Used gate to block doorway to keep dog out of kitchen.
Mar 21, 2013
great idea flimsy construction
as another reviewer also wrote,I would really love this gate made properly. the design and idea are great the construction is cheap and flimsy- i would much prefer to pay more to get a decent quality product
Mar 10, 2013
Wish they would make this gate durable.
I love the gate, just not the way it's poorly made. I would love to have a gate just like this one, but with quality materials.

Great Gates to keep dogs from upstairs
I ordered two gates one for outside and one for upstairs to keep dogs from entering areas.
Feb 24, 2013
Portable fence
I already had 2 of these gates, which have been used for several years. Needed a third to stretch across a larger area in living room. Chose this gate because it is free standing and can be used anywhere in the house.

Not worth the money
Had to send back as arrived broken. Constrction was not very durable. Wouls look for something more substantial to block a dorrway or stairway.

I would buy again.
We use the expandable fence to keep our Golden Retriever puppy on the porch. Very light and easy to move as needed.

Total Garbage
Was not expecting much, but still this item managed to disappoint. Rough scrap wood, dipped in some cheap stain, pinned together with points protruding from the other side, with a warning "Keep away from children and pets" so I have to get a fence to protect my dogs from the fence? Estimated value of this item, 4 dollars.
May 11, 2012
Used best as Garden Decoration
Not to be used to barricade kids or pets, too lightweight and unsteady, babies and kids knock it over, or move it and pets either knock it over or go under it. It was a total waste of money for what I intended to use it for...It would be best used in the garden for decoration where there are no pets or kids.
Apr 08, 2012
Pure Garbage
Received item on Saturday. Assebbled it and put it outside. One small breeze on Sunday and it blew over and is now broken. Real garbage construction, waste of money, wish I never bought it. My advise is don't waste your money like I did.
Mar 28, 2012
Looks much better in the catalog.
I purchased two of these but luckily only one showed up, my money was quickly refunded for the second one I didn't get. I kept the first one but only because it would cost me more to send it back than it's worth. I guess I will give it to a friend for fire wood.
Mar 06, 2012
Expandable Fence
I like the size that this expands to, but the raw wood cheapens it. It does not have a "finished" look to it.

"I would not buy this product again"
We wanted to use the Latice Gate to close off the ramp on our deck so our pet couldn't get out. The product was so rough and splintery, very flimsy, and the nails in the latice were all loose and coming out. We were very disappointed with this product. However, we were very satisfied with the other products we ordered.

Dec 18, 2011
Poor material and assembly of the item.
The material was not put together well, and loosened and fell apart when I put the supports in place. Very disappointed, because in the picture before buying, it looked sturdier then it actually was.
Nov 07, 2011
We use it everywhere!
We bought to help train our dog to stay out of the bedrooms. Soon as we get done painting the porch it will go outside to close off the steps when our dog is on the porch.
Oct 27, 2011
Works ok for pet gate.Would not recommend for use with children.Roughly made.
Oct 24, 2011
Good Gate
Use to keep the house dogs out of the kitchen while cooking. Even though it doesn't attach to the wall they never try to knock it over.
Sep 01, 2011
Very light weight
Used at church to stop children entering an area before entry time.
Aug 19, 2011
Quality not up to par.
For the price, this piece is not worth it.
Aug 11, 2011
Entry of our puppy is halted!!
A kind and easy way to say "NO ENTRY" and mean it to our puppy.
Jul 17, 2011
depends on how you use it.
I bought two so I could keep the dog out of certain rooms. The one in the hallway that isn't moved much is still going strong. The one in the kitchen/living room that everyone moved often lasted a couple of weeks and is in the trash. 60 lb. dog never challenged it
Jun 04, 2011
Good but could be better
I used the fence to block my dog in the kitchen while we are gone and also to block him from going upstairs. While the concept is great and it has worked well for us, the fence broke in several places and I am keeping it together with twine. The wood is not very sturdy and the pins fall out of the slats easily.

Expandable fence
I had a gate like this when my boys were small, and it was a lot stronger....so I am not sure how well this will hold up....we are going to put it on the steps to the pool, to keep the dogs out of the water.
May 04, 2011
very poorly constructed
Great idea but needs to be constructed of higher grade materials. VERY flimsy. Wood was a very poor grade and not sanded and could cause injury to people and animals. Also finish on wood was very uneven.
Apr 21, 2011
Disappointed by Flimsy Craftsmanship
One of the diagonal slats was broken before it was shipped. The thin wood strip was clearly pieced together with another by an application of wood stain and a tiny tack, which of course did not hold together once the fence was expanded the first time(it is an expandable fence). It still works for my purpose, but it will make me think twice before ordering anything else. I realize it was inexpensive, but broken is less than a bargain.
Apr 10, 2011
Nice but flimsy.
I just love the fence, but the wood it is made of is very flimsy. I use it to keep my 7lb.dog on the porch. Works great except the slightest breeze knocks it over.
Apr 06, 2011
Not as useful as I hoped.
I planned to use this fence to keep our small dogs out of the living room at night. However, the construction is so flimsy, it won't keep the terrier from knocking it over whenever she wants to do so. It might work, if she didn't get so rambunctious, but only as a visual barrier.

good for what I need it for

Decorative Expandable Fence
I use the product in front of an open space under the house by the pond. It just decorates the area nicely and goes well with the the brick pavers in the sitting area around the pond.
Mar 06, 2011
Works for my dogs
I find the ease of usage and setup very good
Mar 02, 2011
I bought this gate for my daughter who has 2 Mastiffs. I don't know what the material is but it's not wood and the quality of the gate is too weak and flimsy. I love the concept and if they could make the gate from a sturdier material I would buy it in an instant!
Feb 19, 2011
It fell apart as I was removing it from the box. It was cheaply made and the wood was rough and could cause splinters. This product was not up to Harriet Carter quality.
Jan 24, 2011
It was nice while it lasted....
When I first received the gate, I thought it was wonderful but within a couple of weeks it started falling apart. It is attractive but extremely poorly made. I even went as far as to get another one since it was very convenient thinking that maybe I had a lemon the first time. Well, it happened again, it started breaking apart. The little nails they put in there just fall out. I did found however a better gate that is lower and it more like tri-fold. I bought two of those and they do the trick.
Jan 02, 2011
excellent product for the price
the ONLY problem with this is that my cats figured out how to push the gate open. That is they get themselves between the door frame and gate, and then push it open. But, I had the last laugh. I put a curtain rod fastener on each inside post. And then mounted a little piece of wood at the bottom of the fastener to make a horseshoe shaped holder. And then cut a dowel rod the length I needed for each doorway. So to open the gate I lift up the rod and fold the gate when I need in, otherwise its access denied for the cats. HUH! My sister-in-law liked the gate so much I had to order one for her to keep her cats from going up the stairs to her kids bedrooms. Works perfectly!
Oct 31, 2010
I purchased two of the expanding gates for use in my home for my puppies. At times I need to keep wet or muddy paws only on the ceramic tile floors. I love that I can move them around all the time to keep the puppies off company or confined to just part of the house. My 30 pound Rat Terrier treats the gate as if it were something she can't move or knock over. She sits and looks through or over the top of it. I do have to throw a blanket over them because my Morkie is only 5 pounds and can squish himself small enough to wiggle under. I'm hoping as he grows that he won't be able to wiggle under anymore and I can put the blankets away. It's not the gates fault that I have a Houdini! That was why I bought the gates in the first place - baby gates work, but my husband and I were always having to crawl over them or take them down.
Aug 17, 2010
great as an aea divider
I use this to divide two rooms where there is no door. This keeps my dog off the furniure. Although it is quite flimsy he does'nt know he could push it over. Looks very nice in my home. It expanded to fit a very large opening. Plus I can move it if I need it somewhere else. I am very happy with this product. Works great for what I needed.
Aug 13, 2010
This product serves the intended purpose
I bought the fence to block off a section of the laundry room where we have a doggie door. During temperature extremes our terrier can come in without roaming all over house. It keeps him confined to a small area and he has not challenged the fence.
